The history of Washington County is well-known. South Mountain State Battlefield, Antietam National Battlefield, and the July 1863 Battle of Hagerstown are all located in this Civil War crossroads. However, Washington County has a vibrant cultural scene.
The Maryland Theatre and Performing Arts Complex is located in Hagerstown's Arts & Entertainment District, and it hosts year-round performances. The Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, located in Hagerstown City Park, has an impressive calendar of exhibits, concerts, seminars, films, and special events for people of all ages, all year long. Our Art & Entertainment District is linked to the City Park and the museums by the Cultural Trail.
The majority of Maryland's Appalachian Trail runs north/south through our county. Our southern boundary is formed by the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal and the Potomac River. There are plenty of opportunities for hiking, biking, kayaking, boating, birding, and photography in the Five National Parks and Eight State Parks.
